Effect of Streptocucus agalactiae oral vaccine encapsulated with Alginate/chitosan on growth indices, hematological parameters and immune response of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
Abstract
Introduction: Vaccination is the best strategy agaist streptococosis in tilapia. In this study
the effect of microencapsulation of Streptocuccus agalactiae vaccine with alginate/chitosan
on some growth indices, hematological parameters and immunogenicity of Nile tilapia
(Oreochromis niloticus) was investigated.
Materials & Methods: Three hundred and sixty juvenile Tilapia (30 ±2.32 g) were
randomely divided into four equal groups in triplicates: groups 1 and 2 were immunized
with microencapsulated S. agalactiae and naked vaccine respectively, group 3 was treated
with Alginate /chitosan and group 4 was fed with basal food without additive as control.
Fishes were reared for two months in similar situation and biometrical measurement
recorded every month, then blood samples were taken from each group at days zero, 30 and
60 of experiment. Growth indices and hematological parameters were measured and
compared among the groups. Remained fish in each group were challenged with S.
agalactiae in day 60 0f experiment and cumulative mortality were recorded for 14 days.
Results: Results showed that growth performance indices including FCR, SGR, FER and
PGR were significantly improved in group 1 which orally vaccinated with
microencapsulated vaccine compare to control group (P<0.05). Among the hematological
parameters, just WBC value significantly increased in microencapsulated vaccine treated
group (P<0.05). other hematological parameters didn’t show any significant difference
among the experimental groups (P>0.05). The lowest mortality after challenge with S.
agalactiae was recorded in group 1 with 50% cumulative mortality which is significantly
(P<0.01) different with mortality in control group (95%).
Conclusion: Then it can be concluded that microencapsulation of S. agalactiae oral vaccine
with Alginate/chitosan, not only stimulate growth indices, but also increase resistance
against bacterial infection in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).
