Abstract

Urban environments are hotspots for the development of insecticide resistance in insect populations due to the combined effects of frequent pesticide use and high levels of environmental pollution. This chapter explores the relationship between environmental pollution and insecticide resistance in urban insect populations. It highlights how urban pollutants, including heavy metals and organic compounds, contribute to the development of resistance in pest species, ultimately complicating pest management strategies. Urbanization has significantly altered ecosystems, leading to increased environmental pollution. Insects, as critical components of these ecosystems, are profoundly affected by the combination of urban pollutants and widespread insecticide use. As urban areas grow, the application of chemical insecticides becomes more prevalent, exacerbating resistance in insect populations. This chapter investigates how various pollutants influence the physiological adaptations of urban insects, leading to increased resistance levels. Through a comparative analysis of resistance rates in urban versus rural areas, we demonstrate that urban insects face greater pressures from both pollution and insecticide application. We explore the role of heavy metals and organic pollutants in fostering resistance mechanisms. This understanding is essential for developing effective pest management strategies in urban settings. The findings reveal that urban insect populations exhibit significantly higher resistance rates compared to their rural counterparts, with some species, such as mosquitoes and cockroaches, showing resistance levels exceeding 80%. The data indicate a clear correlation between heavy metal concentrations and resistance levels, with higher concentrations leading to increased resistance. Integrated pest management strategies, including pollution control, demonstrate greater efficacy in reducing resistance compared to conventional methods.
