Microsporidia, obligate intracellular parasites, have emerged as significant pathogens affecting various insect populations, particularly Lepidopteran larvae. This paper delves into the impact of Microsporidia on the growth, development, behavior, and immune response of these larvae. Understanding these interactions is crucial for predicting ecological outcomes, especially in agricultural settings where Lepidopteran species can be both pests and beneficial organisms. The paper begins by providing an overview of Microsporidia, emphasizing their unique biology and pathogenic mechanisms. Lepidopteran larvae play a pivotal role in ecosystems, serving as herbivores and food sources for higher trophic levels. The objectives of this paper include examining how Microsporidia influence the health and survival of these larvae, with a focus on growth rates, developmental timelines, and behavioral changes. Our findings reveal significant reductions in weight gain (up to 61.5%) and alterations in developmental time (up to 60% increase) in infected larvae. Behavioral assessments showed a decline in foraging activity, with scores dropping by 75%. Immune response metrics indicated a direct correlation between pathogen load and percentage mortality, highlighting the detrimental effects of infection on host resilience. This paper underscores the substantial impact of Microsporidia on Lepidopteran larvae, elucidating the broader ecological implications of these interactions. Understanding these dynamics is essential for effective pest management and conservation strategies, particularly in agricultural ecosystems.
