Effectiveness of Anti-Poaching Strategies and Community Engagement Programs on Elephant Population Recovery in Protected Areas

Abstract

Elephants are threatened by poaching, habitat destruction, and conflicts with humans and therefore require urgent conservation within their designated habitats. This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy that integrates antipoaching efforts and community engagement programs towards recovery of elephants. The number of elephants was established using the direct counts, feces, and cameras. Poaching was quantified based on rangers' records and other sources of information. Community engagement included the number of people attending workshops, participating in the incentive program, and participatory monitoring initiatives. Trend analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis methods have been used in order to identify correlations between interventions and population outcomes. Analysis of the results showed that high intervention sites experienced higher annual growth in the number of elephants (by 5.2%), fewer cases of poaching (by 83%) compared to sites with average and low intervention intensity. Juvenile recruitment rate was also higher at high-intensity intervention sites compared to others. Community engagement provided actual data for tracking animals; in particular, there were 1,150 elephant observations made and 1,032 used to plan patrols. The results demonstrate the synergetic relationship between law enforcement and community program efforts, demonstrating that the combination strategy helps to increase the use of habitat and minimize poaching while stabilizing elephant population size. These results empirically illustrate the need to integrate such conservation measures into a large scale and can provide policy recommendations regarding the management of protected areas, emphasizing the importance of combining these efforts for elephant population recovery.
