Circular Economy Adoption in Indian SMEs: Examining Its Impact on Organizational Performance and Competitive Advantage

Abstract

The increasing concerns over environmental degradation, resource scarcity, and sustainable development have encouraged industries worldwide to shift from conventional linear economic models toward Circular Economy (CE) practices. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which represent a substantial component of India's industrial sector, are increasingly encouraged to adopt sustainable business models that enhance resource efficiency and environmental performance. The Circular Economy approach emphasizes resource reduction, reuse, recycling, remanufacturing, and recovery to generate economic value while reducing environmental impacts. This study explores the relationship between Circular Economy adoption, organizational performance, and competitive advantage among Indian SMEs. Based on the Resource-Based View, Stakeholder Theory, and Dynamic Capability Theory, the study examines how CE practices influence operational efficiency, innovation capability, financial performance, and long-term competitiveness. The study reviews contemporary literature and proposes a conceptual framework explaining the mechanisms through which Circular Economy initiatives affect organizational outcomes. Existing empirical evidence indicates that CE adoption can enhance productivity, cost efficiency, environmental performance, and market competitiveness. Nevertheless, financial constraints, technological limitations, limited awareness, and gaps in policy implementation remain significant barriers to broader CE adoption among SMEs. The study offers practical implications for managers, policymakers, and researchers aiming to promote sustainable industrial transformation and strengthen the competitiveness of Indian SMEs.
