Abstract

Climate change is significantly altering agricultural ecosystems by influencing the distribution, development, reproduction, migration, and seasonal activity of crop pests. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall and humidity patterns, warmer winters, droughts, and extreme weather events can modify pest life cycles and enable the expansion of pest populations into previously unsuitable regions. These changes increase the probability of emerging and invasive pest outbreaks, alter pest–crop interactions, and disrupt relationships between pests and their natural enemies. Consequently, shifting pest dynamics can contribute to crop yield and quality losses, increased pesticide dependence, higher production costs, environmental degradation, and risks to food security. This paper examines the influence of major climatic factors on pest ecology and evaluates their implications for sustainable agriculture and crop protection. It further discusses climate-resilient management approaches involving integrated pest management, biological control, resistant crop varieties, crop diversification, and climate-smart agricultural practices. The potential of artificial intelligence, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems, Internet of Things-based monitoring, and predictive early-warning systems for improving pest surveillance and risk assessment is also highlighted. The study emphasizes an integrated approach combining ecological management, climate information, digital monitoring, and predictive analytics to support timely and targeted pest interventions. Such strategies can reduce unnecessary pesticide use, improve agricultural resilience, and contribute to environmentally sustainable crop protection under changing climatic conditions.
