Abstract

Introduction: Nowadays, emphasis on the importance of algae in the field of food and pharmaceutical industries is increasing. In general, marine organisms can be an important source for the extraction of compounds with antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Materials & Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate the antifungal and antibacterial effects of Iyengaria stellata on Candida albicans and Salmonella typhi using 4 extracts of N-hexane, Estonia, diethyl ether and methanol.
Results: According to the results, the use of 3000 μg/l of N-hexane extract of Iyengaria stellata or 2000 μg/l of Estonian extract of this alga prevents the growth of Candida albicans fungus and these two extracts at a concentration of 5000 μg/l showed the best performance. Also, using a concentration of 4000 μg/l of N-hexane extract of Iyengaria stellata or 5000 μg/l of diethyl ether extract of this alga prevents the growth of Salmonella typhi bacteria and its hexane extract at a concentration of 4000 μg/l causes the death of this bacterium.
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the extract of brown algae Iyengaria stellata can be used as a new source for antimicrobial drugs and their replacement with antifungal and synthetic antibacterial agents.
